Kaiseki
Blending Mediterranean and Asian cuisine may sound outlandish or rather difficult to get right. Kaiseki proves that the two can come together, surprise and captivate. This small restaurant is situated a few doors down from the old University of Malta and the people behind Kaiseki have done wonders with the small space available to them. Tastefully but minimally decorated, the restaurant allows the wonderful stone walls and arches to take total dominance. The chairs are standout pieces in themselves and the bar is an added attraction but never a distraction. The cutlery, the crockery, the finesse of the lighting, blend perfectly with the whole Kaiseki experience, a true oasis of calm and good taste.
The food is in harmony with the surroundings, pure artistry for the eye but especially for the taste buds. The mix of Mediterranean and Asian with ingredients from both cultures works seamlessly. Kaiseki is a Japanese-style cuisine where a number of small, intricate dishes are served. Let the array of flavours transport you from Valletta in the Mediterranean to Asia. The delicately prepared and placed dishes are well presented in their different plates. Go for the pork gyoza and duck breast starters. Close off the Kaiseki meal with the coconut tart and the signature SaSuMa cocktail for a memorable finish.
