Ta’ Tona
Fifty metres from Mgarr Harbour in Gozo, this unassuming family-run restaurant is always busy. It’s an easy walk from the ferry terminal, making it popular with Maltese groups and families who come knowing they’ll get good food and a warm welcome, and tourist couples who come back for a second or third night, now knowing the same. The emphasis is on the food and service rather than views or music, and the cosy indoor space (a former sherman’s boathouse) and the open air and part covered spaces are comfortable yet relaxed and full of conversation.
The menu has something for everyone, covering fish dishes like the Angus steaks and lamb shanks, alongside pasta favourites such as sheep cheese ravioli and linguine nero di seppia, and a few vegetarian options. But as you would hope for in a restaurant so close to the harbour, it’s the fish menu that is the star of the show, such as the fish crudo misto for starters, and an impressive tray of locally-caught fresh fish brought to your table. The catch varies daily and includes some less common options, so do ask the knowledgeable and friendly staff for recommendations. Homely desserts such as the apple crumble, and a menu of whiskeys and grappas are on offer to finish your meal.
