Trattoria ix-Xatba
Mellieħa, one of Malta’s most picturesque villages, also boasts the magnificent Għadira Bay. Nestled just before the bay is Trattoria ix-Xatba. It offers a few outdoor seats with the captivating view of Mellieħa perched on a hill. The décor at Xatba is, as befits a true trattoria, subdued, casual and easy on the eye. Nothing distracting from the main detail, the food. Hanging on a wall, however, is a fabulous brass sculpture of fish, or many fishes in a twirling circle. But even this, and the adjacent bar, do not distract, they just add a bit of whimsy. The lighting is good, the menu easily legible and the affable service an added plus to the whole Xatba experience.
Dish presentation is excellent, adding delight to the senses while dining at Xatba. It is in taste, sometimes delicate, sometimes explosive, always satisfying, that the place excels. The choice of fare is extensive, but food is mainly focused on fish and seafood, while still offering delectable meat dishes and also catering for vegetarian diners. The homemade fishcakes and the arancini are perfect antipasti. The pasta, as is proper at a trattoria, is just right in texture and in the blending of ingredients. Go for the spaghetti al nero di seppia, or the fettuccine al tartufo nero. The fresh fish of the day, filleted at your table or not, is delicately cooked and tasty.
