Sicilia Bella
Amongst the boat-houses and restaurants in Mgarr’s harbour area, Sicilia Bella is a little piece of Sicily. Under new ownership since October 2020, the two local owners run the front-of-house whilst a Sicilian family team run the kitchen. Although there is a traditional stone dining room, most diners opt for tables on the covered terrace area to enjoy harbour views and watch the ferries. In summer, you’ll also find tables on the waterfront. Although busy, the service team is efficient. Minimal waiting times and a friendly and unpretentious atmosphere make this a great place to relax and chat over a good meal.
The menu comprises antipasti, pasta and risotto dishes, fish or meat main courses, and a selection of local and Italian wines. Portion sizes are generous, and the lovely plating makes you want to tuck in. Spaghetti with lobster is a regular feature on the specials menu. You’ll also find some less typical pasta varieties such as garganelli or Sicilian cavati. However, the seafood is the star of the show. Choose from grilled or oven-baked local fish, or mussels cooked in white wine or Sicilian-style tomato sauce. The popular —Å“misto mare” platter featuring five types of marinated seafood is a show-stealer. Conclude in Silician style with homemade cassata Siciliana, panna cotta or cannoli.
